British soldiers get new body armor

LONDON, (UPI) -- British forces set for October deployment to Afghanistan will be equipped with upgraded body armor, the British Ministry of Defense announced.

The Defense Ministry said soldiers with the 16 Air Assault Brigade will head into theater with the new Osprey Mark 4 body armor.

The next-generation Osprey Mark 4 system features a better fit for warfighters and upgraded body armor. The Osprey is a modular system that comes with a newly designed camouflage pattern.

"The whole design, performance of the (body armor) plate and filler, the shape of the cover, they're all based on the threat the guys are facing, what's actually being thrown at them," said Alan Hepper from the Defense Science and Technology Laboratory, which helped develop the armor.

The Osprey Mark 4 body armor forms a key component of the $4,400 kit given to soldiers scheduled for deployment.
