LOS ANGELES, -- Illegal use of disabled parking passes has become a common infraction in California, the state's Department of Motor Vehicles says.
Currently in California, 1-in-10 drivers have disabled parking placards and transportation experts say abuse is common, the Los Angeles Times reported Sunday. The state DMV says more than a third of all vehicles displaying the tags are doing so illegally, the newspaper said.
Healthy people borrow them from their legal owners and use them illegally to park for unlimited amounts of time in spaces designated for people with disabilities.
Questionable medical practices may also be at play, the Times said. However, because of patient privacy laws, law enforcement has been met with resistance.
To counteract the fraudulent use of disabled parking placards, the DMV carried out multiple sting operations in high-volume parking areas throughout the state, and plans on doing more.
