Canada Day murder trial starts

The jury trial for a man accused in a slaying at a downtown transit centre on Canada Day 2009 started Tuesday in an Edmonton courtroom.

Augustine Darren Poitras faces a second-degree murder charge in the death of Shane Howarth, 42.

Howarth was killed at the transit centre at 100th St. and Jasper Avenue, just after the Canada Day fireworks celebration.

The Crown prosecutor gave her opening remarks to the jury on the first morning of the trial.
