Canada says aware of protectionist risk in auto aid

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LONDON (Reuters) – Canada's Conservative government is determined to design an auto-sector bailout that avoids the risk of protectionism, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said on Thursday.
"We are being very careful to ensure that assistance is available across the board and equitably and not in a way that is simply to the benefit of certain companies or enhances some kind of protectionist agenda," Harper told reporters after a G20 summit in London.
He said Ottawa worked closely with Washington to ensure neither government's actions would harm the other country and was consulting with automakers other than the Detroit Three as well as with parts suppliers.
