Cast aligns for 'Spartacus' prequel
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., Australian actor Dustin Clare has been cast as Gannicus, champion of Capua, in the upcoming series "Spartacus: Gods of the Arena," Starz said.
"Arena" is to make its debut in January. The six-part prequel to the drama "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" is to begin production next month.
Clare is best known to audiences in Australia, where he had major roles on a number of long-running TV series, including "Satisfaction," "Underbelly" and "McLeod's Daughter."
Jaime Murray and Marisa Ramirez have also signed up for roles in the show, the cable television network said.
Murray plays Gaia, a Capua social climber. She starred in the CW series "Valentine" and had an extended role on Showtime's "Dexter." Ramirez is best known for her long runs on "General Hospital" and "The Young and the Restless" and was recently seen on "Past Life" and "Miami Medical."
A synopsis of "Arena" says it "brings to life the story of Gannicus, the first gladiator to become champion of Capua."
Production on the second season of "Blood and Sand" was postponed this spring to allow star Andy Whitfield to be treated for non-Hodgkin lymphoma in New Zealand. His doctors indicate that the actor is responding well, Starz said.
