Child accompanies Mom on robbery
COLUMBIA, S.C., (UPI) -- Police in South Carolina say they have arrested a female robbery suspect who brought her 7-year-old daughter along on a heist.
Ethel Mae Nelson, 45, of Newberry, S.C., has been charged with armed robbery, possession of a weapon and unlawful conduct toward a child, The (Columbia) State reported Thursday.
Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster says Nelson's daughter stood outside Robert's gas station while her mother, brandishing a knife, forced the clerk inside to hand over nearly $300.
The two then fled the scene.
About 30 minutes after the robbery, a deputy spotted a taxicab with a woman who fit Nelson's description.
When the deputy tried to apprehend her, Nelson exited the cab leaving her daughter behind.
Foster says the child has been placed in state custody and Nelson is hospitalized with a broken leg she suffered trying to run away.
