MILWAUKEE -- A Marquette University professor is under investigation after someone found child pornography on his university computer.

WISN 12 News isn't naming the professor because he hasn't been arrested or charged while forensic investigators examine the contents of the computer.

However, a source told 12 News a preliminary investigation found pornographic images of children on the computer.

The computer in question is owned by Marquette University and was located in the office of a professor in the engineering department.

The university consented to allowing police to examine the computer, so no search warrant was necessary.

Late Thursday afternoon, Milwaukee police issued a short statement confirming the investigation. It read in part, "We are currently evaluating the contents to determine if a crime was committed."

Marquette University isn't confirming or denying the allegations, issuing a statement Thursday afternoon reading, "The university investigates any allegation involving violation of its acceptable use policy. Such investigations are typically personnel or student conduct matters about which we do not comment."

WISN 12 News has learned the investigation started when another person was using the computer and discovered the images. The university then contacted police.
