TULSA - A gold half Krugerrand coin worth $680 was dropped into a Salvation Army kettle Tuesday, according to the Salvation Army's Major Roy Williams.
The Krugerrand is a South African coin that contains one troy ounce of gold.
Williams, the Salvation Army Tulsa Area Commander, said the coin was found in a kettle located at the Reasor's grocery store at 15th and Lewis.
It was wrapped in paper with "Merry Christmas" written at the top.
It's the 16th time in the past 17 years a Krugerrand was found in a Salvation Army kettle in Tulsa. Last year one was found in Oklahoma City.
No one has ever been identified as the donor, but that doesn't matter to Major Williams.
“We are thankful to whoever the generous person is who gave us the half Krugerrand because every year Tulsans watch for it to appear in a kettle before Christmas. But we are also thankful to every person who drops a coin or bill in the kettle.”
The Salvation Army bought gifts and food for 3,500 Tulsa families with contributions from the kettles and Angel Trees this year.
