COL BB: S.C. 2, UCLA 1 (11 innings)
OMAHA, (UPI) -- Whit Merrifield drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 11th Tuesday to give South Carolina a 2-1 win over UCLA in final game of the College World Series.
The victory gave the Gamecocks a two-game sweep in the series against the Bruins and their first ever CWS championship.
South Carolina lost the first game of the playoffs but won their next 12 in a row to win the title.
Merrifield drove a fastball from closer Dan Klein down the right field line, scoring Scott Wingo from third.
"I worked the count in my favor, got a fastball, even though it was down I got the barrel on it," Merrifield said.
The Bruins took the lead in the fifth inning when Trevor Brown singled, moved to second on a groundout and then came home on a single by Nick Gallego.
South Carolina tied the score 1-1 in the eighth when pinch-runner Robert Beary raced home from second when a chopper off the bat of Bobby Haney glanced off first baseman Dean Espy's glove into right field for an error.
