Cowboys: Bryant hazing flap no big deal

SAN ANTONIO, An incident in which Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant refused to submit to rookie hazing is no big deal, Coach Wade Phillips said Monday.

Bryant's refusal Sunday to carry fellow receiver Roy Williams' shoulder pads as part of rookie initiation tradition at the Cowboys' training camp in San Antonio generated a media controversy. Phillips, however, called it a "non-issue," the Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram reported.

"It's not a problem with either of them or our football team," Phillips told the newspaper. "I'd like to cut it off now and say nobody's going to talk about it, but that's not the case with the Dallas Cowboys."

Williams concurred, saying, "If he doesn't want to do it, he doesn't have to do it. Not a big deal. It's not football-related, so whatever."

Bryant had a stellar day of practice Monday, impressing onlookers with his speed and football abilities, but didn't talk to the media afterward, the Star-Telegram said.
