Dating service settles suit with clients

BELLEVUE, Wash., (UPI) -- The Seattle affiliate of a computer dating service signed a settlement agreement after unhappy clients filed a lawsuit, Washington's attorney general said.

The suit -- filed Tuesday against the Bellevue-based DMZ Group, LLC, a subsidiary of Great Expectations -- alleged that the service had been making promises it didn't deliver on and made high-pressure sales pitches for fees of thousands of dollars, Seattlepi.com reported.

The settlement includes no admission of wrongdoing, Seattlepi.com said.

"Anyone willing to pay for assistance in finding a soul mate deserves to know exactly what they're signing up for," Attorney General Rob McKenna said. "This settlement will help ensure singles receive upfront, accurate information from Great Expectations before they seal the deal."

The Washington state attorney general's office has received almost 60 complaints about the service since 2006, the report said.

The DMZ Group must pay $37,000 in restitution to eligible Washington clients, $47,000 in state attorneys' fees and costs, and a $5,000 civil penalty. An additional $30,000 in civil penalties was suspended, on condition that the company adheres to the terms of the settlement, court records showed.
