DAYTONA BEACH --
While it's not something we normally cover, the planned monster truck races in Daytona Beach aren't your normal event.
Daytona Beach is used to seeing racing, but if you go to Ocean Center this weekend, you won't believe what the drivers are racing on.
On Friday night, the trucks will smash cars and anything else in their way during the Monster X Tour.
Rodney Tweety drives Bigfoot. It's the truck that started the monster truck fascination years ago.
"It's really awesome to be honest with you. When you go to drive Bigfoot, you're actually driving the granddaddy of them all," Tweety said.
But the races this weekend are a little different.
The floors of the Ocean Center are covered in Coca-Cola syrup.
About 10 gallons will be spread in a thin layer over the concrete. It's there to keep the trucks and motorcycles from sliding around.
Just as the Daytona 500 kicks off the stock car season in February, this weekend's event kicks off the racing season for the monster trucks.
New asphalt will challenge NASCAR drivers at Daytona International Speedway just as the Coke-soaked track will challenge the monster truck drivers.
"When you race on dirt, dirt's a little cushion to the truck. When you're racing on concrete like this, when you land, you just have your tires and your shocks is all you've got for suspension," Tweety said.
So when it comes to racing indoors, it looks like Coke is the real thing.
"We've done a couple of races on the floors where they didn't put the Coke down. They were very slick and it takes a bit more skill because it's basically like riding on ice," said motorcycle racer Mike Heff.
In case you were wondering, 10 gallons of Coca-Cola syrup makes 60 gallons of the soft drink, which is 640, 12-ounce cans.
