Deputy allegedly faked accident
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., (UPI) -- Authorities in Florida said a deputy suspended on a theft accusation is now facing charges of grand theft and insurance fraud.

The Broward County Sheriff's Office said Shawn Barber, 43, who was suspended without pay in December due to allegations he stole his neighbor's tractor in The Acreage, is facing additional charges stemming from a fake insurance claim and accident report he allegedly concocted with his wife, Wendy, The Palm Beach (Fla.) Post reported Friday.

Investigators said the Barbers were supposed to go to a Def Leppard concert in 2008 but the babysitter didn't show up so they made up a fake accident report March 29 claiming Wendy Barber got into a traffic accident with neighbor, Sharyn Iaboni, 43.

Barber wrote his wife a ticket for the crash, using a case number connected to an unrelated incident.

The Barbers filed an insurance claim with Access America, a processing company for Mondial Assistance.

Shawn Barber and Iaboni were both charged with insurance fraud, grand theft and communications fraud. They could each face 10 years in prison if convicted.
