Disney to pay Celador $269.2M in damages
LOS ANGELES, (UPI) -- A federal jury in Riverside, Calif., awarded Celador International, creator of the game show "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire," nearly $269.2 million in damages.
The Los Angeles Times said Celador sued The Walt Disney Co. in 2004, demanding what it said was its fair share of profits from the show, which aired on Disney's ABC-TV network for three years, starting in 1999. A shortened version of the series has appeared in syndication on local TV stations in recent years.
The damages cover licensing fees and money owed to Celador from the sale of "Millionaire"-related merchandise, the Times said Wednesday.
"We believe this verdict is fundamentally wrong and will aggressively seek to have it reversed," Disney said in the statement issued to the newspaper.
