NEW YORK —
Demonstrators gathered outside the offices of Hot 97 Tuesday calling for the firing of one of the station's morning show disc jockeys after he made an on-air crack slamming the Haitian community.

DJ Cipha Sounds, who co-hosts the station's early morning show, infuriated listeners Friday after explaining the reason why he's never contracted the HIV virus.

"The reason I'm HIV negative is because I don't mess with Haitian girls," the deejay said during a discussion with co-hosts.

Cipha Sounds, whose real name is Luis Diaz, later apologized for the remark after the station was flooded with phone calls and emails.

"I made a stupid, tasteless joke that was a one-liner that was taken totally the wrong way," he said on the air. "I want to say sincerely that I apologize."

The apology apparently wasn't enough for Haitian community leaders who rallied outside Hot 97 Headquarters in the West Village Tuesday.
