Dow higher with Nasdaq flat

NEW YORK, (UPI) -- U.S. markets were mixed Thursday, but the Dow Jones industrial average rose on positive news from the International Monetary Fund and the Labor Department.

The IMF increased its growth projection for the global economy to 4.6 percent, compared with April's estimate of 4.2 percent growth. In Washington, the Labor Department said 21,000 first-time jobless claims were filed in the week ending July 3 compared with the previous week.

In early afternoon trading, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 46.62 points or 0.47 percent to 10,064.90. The Standard & Poor's 500 index gained 2.27 or 0.21 percent to 1,062.54. The Nasdaq composite index of tech-dominated stocks lost 0.13 or 0.01 percent to 2,159.34.

The benchmark 10-year treasury note fell 13/32 to yield 3.029 percent.

The euro rose to $1.266 from Wednesday's $1.2642. Against the yen, the dollar rose to 88.43 yen from Wednesday's 87.75 yen.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 index rose 2.76 percent, 256.09, to 9,535.74.

In Britain, the FTSE 100 index added 1.81 percent, 90.63, to 5,105.45.
