EU, U.S. close on bank data pact

BRUSSELS, (UPI) -- European Union commissioners have approved the draft of a pact to provide the United States with international banking data as an anti-terrorist measure.

The draft will be sent to the EU council of ministers and to the European Parliament

for final approval, the EUobserver reported Tuesday.

The agreement allows for a transfer of data for anti-terrorist concerns only and prohibits random mining of data and profiled targeting of information.

A previous pact was rejected by the EU commissioners, but the current deal is likely to be approved as it is "significantly" different from the original version, Home Affairs Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom said.

The new pact includes the right to administrative and judicial review. It also provides for independent auditors to review requests for information based on privacy concerns.

Where applicable, the United States has also agreed to send bank data to the EU's police agency Europol and to any specific member nation affected by an investigation, the EUobserver said.
