Falling ice kills Wash. girl, 11
VERLOT, Wash., An accident at the Big Four ice caves in Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest killed an 11-year-old girl and injured her mother, Washington officials said.

KOMO-TV, Seattle, reported the victims' family was on an outing to the caves Saturday. The mother and daughter were standing on an ice field when a massive chunk of ice tumbled down, Snohomish County sheriff's spokesman Jeff Brand said.

Struck by the falling ice, the girl later died of her injuries. The girl's mother suffered injuries and was taken to a hospital, the report said. There was no word on her condition.

KOMO said signs at the site warn of the dangers of entering the caves. Brand said the mother and daughter were not inside a cave, but were standing next to them.

The names of the victims were not included in the report.
