An early-morning fire tore through a South Korean nursing home, killing ten people and injuring another seventeen, according to police.

The fire at the senior citizens' residence broke out shortly before before dawn on Friday in Pohang, a port city on South Korea's southeastern coast about 375 km (233 miles) from Seoul.

About 200 firefighters, using at least 20 trucks, battled the blaze, according to state media reports. They stifled the fire within 30 minutes, a South Korean police spokesperson said.

The fire began on the first floor of the two-story building, the police spokesperson said, adding that authorities have yet to officially determine its cause.

All of the victims were in their 70s and 80s, with the surviving victims being treated at area hospitals, according to police.

The privately operated nursing home was exclusively for women, with those hurt ranging in age from 50 to 91, state-run news agency Yonhap reported.
