Fish notches first-round Atlanta win

ATLANTA, American Mardy Fish defeated James Ward of Britain Monday to move on to the second round of the Atlanta Tennis Championships.

Fish, the No. 6 seed, had little trouble with the British wild card, downing him 6-1, 6-2 to continue the momentum he established by winning the Newport tournament this month.

The Newport victory vaulted the 28-year-old Fish 30 spots to No. 49 in the world rankings.

In other first-round Atlanta matches, No. 8 seed Benjamin Becker of Germany fell in an upset to American Michael Russell 6-3, 6-3, and countryman Rajeev Ram took care of Slovakia's Karol Beck 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).

Ukraine's Illya Marchenko downed Kristof Vliegen of Belgium 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) and Russia's Teimuraz Gabashvili dispatched Rainer Schuettler of Germany 6-1, 6-4.
