YAZOO CITY, Miss. -- The flooded Mississippi River is creating major problems for a Yazoo City cemetery.
High water forced three caskets to float out of the ground on Thursday at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church.
"I have a mother there; I have a sister buried there," said church deacon Gregg Giles.
Giles said it was a call he never expected.
Rising Water Lifts Caskets From Soggy Ground
"It's the first time we've ever seen water like this, and it was just shocking," he said.
Bethel Missionary Baptist Church has stood its ground since 1859, but it has been no match for high floodwaters.
"There's 2 1/2 feet of water over the cemetery," said Yazoo County Coroner Ricky Shivers. "The top of the headstones are the only things showing right now."
Shivers said it's something he has never dealt with before.
"One of them was in a concrete vault," he said. "We were able to get the top off the vault and get the casket out because the vault itself was floating."
He said it wasn't easy to find a place to store them, either, with the state medical examiner's office full.
"They are now in a refrigerated truck, and they will stay there until the water goes down so we can find out exactly where they go with the assistance of the historian of the church," Shivers said.
Giles said he's not concerned about his loved ones' graves, and he doesn't want church members to be either.
"I know that some of them are worried, but we just want to let them know that we're going to do everything we can to make sure that everything's taken care of," he said.
