French seize huge cocaine cache

FORT-DE-FRANCE, Martinique, The Caribbean island of Martinique is holding a Swedish man after French customs officials allegedly found 3,000 pounds of cocaine on his sailboat.

The drugs, estimated to be worth $109.51 million, were found hidden among jute sacks when the boat was stopped some 40 nautical miles off Martinique, an overseas French department, the Swedish news agency TT reported Wednesday.

The seizure is the largest ever for France, French officials said.

They said the drugs were apparently headed for the European market, TT reported.

Sweden's honorary consul for Martinique said he has tried to visit the unidentified suspect but so far has not received permission to do so.

He told TT that the man is 54-years-old lives in western Sweden and has sat on the board of a number of companies. The suspect was not named in the report.

The seizure of the drugs and the suspect's arrest occurred on June 4.

French authorities said their investigation is expected to take a long time, the report said.
