A minimum security prison near Winnipeg was evacuated Tuesday after contractors ruptured a gas line into the institution.

The Correctional Service of Canada said in a news release that the line at Rockwood Institution was ruptured about 2:30 p.m. CT.

All gas lines to the prison were turned off and inmates from two houses were moved to neighbouring Stony Mountain Institution until it's deemed safe for them to return.

Manitoba Hydro crews were repairing the line.

The prison, which currently houses 129 inmates, has cancelled regularly scheduled visits. The CSC didn't say how many inmates had been moved or when they might be returned to the prison.

Rockwood Institution is 11 kilometres north of Winnipeg.
