Innisfail RCMP were called to the medium security federal penitentiary at about 11 a.m. MT Sunday to reports of a critically injured man in his 30s.

The man was taken to Innisfail Hospital, where he later died. The victim's name will not be released until his family has been notified.

The RCMP is investigating the death as a homicide.

Bowden Institution was placed on general lockdown following the inmate's death. The facility will remain on lockdown until management determines it is safe to resume normal operations. All visits to inmates have been cancelled until further notice.

As in all cases where an inmate dies in custody, the police and the coroner are called in to investigate. The Correctional Service of Canada will also conduct a review of the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Bowden Institution is a federal correctional facility currently holding 557 inmates. It is located about five kilometres south of Innisfail, Alta.
