The city of Gatineau in western Quebec is dealing with the results of flooding caused by thunderstorms and torrential downpours this week.

The city's mayor, Marc Bureau, said about 120 millimetres of rain has fallen in the past couple of days, causing major problems.

The rain flooded and collapsed some roads, and filled basements and cars with water.

An emergency committee met in Gatineau on Saturday and two zones in the city had to be evacuated, including a trailer park.

The mayor said so much rain fell over such a short period of time that storm sewers overflowed.

Bureau said the city has opened an emergency centre for evacuees, and its public works, police and fire departments are all on emergency standby.

There is more rain in the forecast for the region on Saturday.

Rain and thunderstorms were also a problem across the river in Ottawa, which saw collapsed roads and power outages.

The city of Ottawa said it received more than 100 phone calls about the rain.
