OMAHA, Neb. -- Rescuers reached a 12-year-old girl who was stuck waist-deep in the mud at Lake Zorinksy. Sarah Harper said she was searching for shells to give as Christmas presents.

Crews got the call for help at about 4:50 p.m Thursday. They said Harper had been stuck for at least two hours.

"It's pretty swampy back in there. She was stuck up to her hips. She could not get out," said Battalion Chief Chris Harrison. "It's almost like quicksand in some areas. As you were walking out there, you were knee-deep in mud."

The area is not accessible by vehicles. Rescuers had to hike to Harper. One first responder told KETV NewsWatch 7 that he has never seen a case like this before.

Harrison said his crews wore ice suits because of the cold temperatures.

Harper said Friday that she was looking for the fresh water clam shells in the marshy area on the west side of the lake when she go stuck and sunk up to her waist. She said she tried to call for help and finally got the attention of an off-duty police officer who happened to be walking by.

Harper said she was really never scared, but she said she did start to pray.

The girl was removed from the mud and carried several hundred yards back to an ambulance and then taken to a hospital as a precaution.
