A teen girl who seriously injured herself after attempting suicide at a Winnipeg youth jail has died.

The Provincial Medical Examiner's office is investigating the 17-year-old's death a spokesperson for the office confirmed Wednesday.

It has not been decided whether a public inquest into the girl's death will take place.

The girl was rushed to hospital from the Manitoba Youth Centre last Wednesday night after the attempt on her life, which was described by a Manitoba Justice official as a "serious" attempt.

The girl had tried to hang herself. She was on remand awaiting trial for second-degree murder, according to media reports.

The girl's hanging is the second sucide-related death at the youth jail in the last six months. It is located on the edge of Winnipeg's Tuxedo neighbourhood.

Prior to the suicide attempts, the MYC hadn't had a suicide-related death in 35 years.

Provincial head of youth corrections Louis Goulet said staff have tried to react quickly to the deaths.

Rooms in the units have been physically altered, and pillow cases and sheets have been removed and replaced with fleece blankets, Goulet said.

Inmates determined to be suicide risks are also watched more closely.

"We've increased our monitoring of those youths to five-minute checks," Goulet said.

He said the needs of youths being held at MYC have changed dramatically over the years.

"The population that is coming to us now is presenting more complex and challenging needs. A lot of the girls come to us with a background of trauma, a background of abuse," said Goulet.
Staff, along with corrections officials, have been shaken by the deaths and are determined to prevent any others from happening, Goulet said.
