Goldberg to appear in 'Sister Act' show

LONDON, (UPI) -- Hollywood actress

and TV personality Whoopi Goldberg has signed on to appear in the London stage version of her 1992 film "Sister Act."

In the movie, Goldberg, 54, played a showgirl who goes into hiding in a convent after witnessing a murder. Posing as a nun, she finds herself bonding with the other sisters, much to the chagrin of the stern Mother Superior in charge of the convent.

The BBC said Goldberg, who is a producer on the stage musical version of "Sister Act," will play the role of Mother Superior when she makes her West End debut Aug. 31.

The moderator of the U.S. chat show "The View" is expected to headline 23 performances of "Sister Act," the BBC said.

Goldberg previously appeared in the Broadway revivals of "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" and "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom."
