Scammer hater
The grandmother of a boy whose death led to a second-degree murder charge has testified about how she learned that something had happened to Tameron Rose.
Evelyn Rose testified Wednesday in Corner Brook at the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador trial of Jeffery Tippett, who is accused of killing the 11-month-old boy more than four years ago.
Rose told the jury that she was just one day away from retirement and had been planning to care for her grandson herself, while her daughter was at school.
On Jan. 30, 2009, she received a phone call from Tippett, whose girlfriend Tanya Tulk was babysitting the child.
Until that moment, she testified, she had never spoken with Tippett.
"Tameron had fainted," she recalled Tippett saying. "They couldn't bring him around."
Asked if Tippett had said anything further, Rose testified, "If he said anything else, I didn't hear it. I just wanted out of the house to see what was going on."
Up until that moment, Rose testified, she had no indication the day would go so horribly wrong.
She had spent time with Tameron that morning, while getting him dressed and feeding him.
The boy had had inflammation in his hip earlier that month, but Rose testified that he was a happy and content baby that morning.
On the ride to Tulk's home, she testified, Tameron sat calmly in his car seat. Rose said she waited in the car, while her daughter, Maria Rose, took Tameron inside.
Maria Rose testified earlier this week that there was nothing unusual or concerning about her son on the day she took him to Tulk's home.
Evelyn Rose said the next time she saw her grandson, he was on a stretcher in the emergency room of Corner Brook's hospital, waiting for an air ambulance to take him to St. John's.
He died hours later.
Meanwhile, Rose testified that only once did she question the care that Tameron was receiving. One day the boy came home with a small mark over an eyebrow, but she was satisfied with the explanation that Tulk had provided.
The trial resumes on Monday.
