Kyle Gowen has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for at least 15 years, after admitting to killing Dillon Jewett last fall.

Gowen, 23, of Eastern Passage, pleaded guilty Tuesday to second-degree murder during an appearance in Kentville provincial court.

Justice Suzanne Hood accepted a joint sentencing recommendation from the Crown and defence.

"Let there be no misunderstanding. This is a life sentence," she told the court as she passed the sentence.

"We have heard the victim impact statements from the victim's mother and family. Nothing can lessen their grief. None of us who have not felt their loss can understand."

Gowen told the court that nothing he says or does can change the fact that he's taken the life of someone's best friend and son.

He also apologized to his 21-year-old brother, Steven Gowen, and 19-year-old Amanda Greene, who are both charged with first-degree murder. James William Patterson, 21, was later charged with accessory to murder after the fact.

"Kyle said he was sorry. That's all he can do. To the extent that he was able, he did not want to go to a trial. He felt that that would spare the family, Mr. Jewett's family, the requirement of a trial," said Brian Bailey, Kyle Gowen's lawyer.

"He felt remorse. He thought that was one way to express it."

Jewett, 18, was killed last October. His body was found in a quarry in East Uniacke on Oct. 3 by all-terrain vehicle drivers. Police said he was shot to death.

Gowen told the court he took a rifle to his confrontation last fall with Jewett.

"When they went to the gravel pit, the first round discharged accidentally. But the second two rounds were intentional and there were three bullets in total," said Bailey.

Kyle Gowen was originally charged with first-degree murder. Last month, he waived his right to a preliminary inquiry and chose to take part in a resolution conference.

Steven Gowen is scheduled to be in court later this week on the first-degree murder charge.

Greene has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Friday in Shubenacadie provincial court. Patterson is scheduled to return to Dartmouth provincial court July 4 for election and plea. Both Greene and Patterson are free on bail.
