Harper warns mayors: Stimulus will end
TORONTO, (UPI) -- Prime Minister Stephen Harper warned Canadian mayors Friday that the stimulus program must end on schedule next year to allow for deficit reduction.

The government allocated $43 billion Canadian ($41 billion U.S.) for infrastructure projects. The money spigot is scheduled to be turned off on March 31, 201, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

Harper told the Canadian Federation of Municipalities the spending has been important to Canada's economic recovery. But he said cutting the deficit is also key to its comeback.

"People can't live on adrenalin, and economies can't live on stimulus," Harper said.

He predicted Canada will have one of the strongest recoveries and promised to push for fiscal responsibility in other countries at next month's Group of Eight and Group of 20 meetings in Ontario.

"Canada was the last major developed country dragged into the recession, and we will be the least affected by it and will emerge from it fastest and in the strongest position of them all," Harper said.
