How do I connect a mini DV camcorder to a computer via firewire?

I have the Canon Elura 100 Mini DV camcorder and I am trying to connect it to my PC via firewire so I can transfer my videos to my PC to edit them. When I connect my camcorder to my PC with the firewire nothing happens. I don't know what to do from there. Can someone please tell me what to do or what the problem might be.-My PC has windows XP and all the required RAM and enough disk space.
