[Confused!] I really need some help here

I dont know where else to go, or where else to look on google for my questions.
I really dont know much about computers but I am trying.
I am writing a book and wanted to back up my files because my computer has crashed and lost all info a few times.

I wanted to get floppy discs but someone told me to get a thumbnail.

So I got the thing,
they said it was very easy to use just plug it in and do it.

Well it didnt work that way I dont know how to work it or transfer my files

Can someone PLEASE HELP ME
I just need simple step by step instructions

Hello mountainman
1 - plug in thumb drive into usb port
2 - wait for computer to discover and load drivers for your thumb drive,
it will say installed and ready to use
3 - Go to my computer and look for your thumb drive it will be listed there.
4 - Go back to your file and save the portion you want to save choose "save as" and it will ask you where just tell it which drive it's on probably the last drive.
Just navigate to the drive or folder on that drive ans save there.
