Insitu to build drone for Navy, Marines

BINGEN, Wash., The U.S. Naval Air Systems Command has awarded a contract to Insitu Inc. to build and test its Integrator unmanned aircraft system to Tier II UAS requirements.

Under the two-year contract, Integrator will support two operational assessments, the first to determine if an early operational capability option will be exercised leading to the fielding of up to five systems in fiscal 2011; the second to support low-rate initial production of two systems.

One system would be for the Navy, the other for the Marine Corps, before expected full production of as many as 56 systems, the company said.

Insitu's Integrator extends the company's Insight family of unmanned aerial vehicles -- including ScanEagle -- with the ability to carry out longer missions with larger payloads. The company said Integrator has a modular design that allows for decoupling of the payload from the airframe to make payload integration easier.

The aircraft is designed to cruise at 55 knots and has a service ceiling is 20,000 feet.

Insitu is a subsidiary of Boeing and will fulfill the contract in cooperation with Harris Corporation, Corsair Engineering and Black Ram Engineering Services.
