Jaleel White: Proud to be Urkel
LOS ANGELES, (UPI) -- Jaleel White says he is proud of his run as U.S. television's Steve Urkel and doesn't see the oddball role as a typecasting curse.

"This is the great accident," said White, whose uber-nerd Urkel was a classic character in the ABC sitcom "Family Matters." "It's one of the greatest things that ever happened to me."

The Los Angeles Times said Saturday that White, now 33, doesn't share any of the bitterness fellow child actor Gary Coleman displayed after his career flickered out. A significant difference has been White's steadfast relationship with his family and friends.

White has a lower profile than he did during "Family Matters" 9-year run in the 1990s; however, he remains active in Hollywood through bit parts, writing and Internet projects such as the current series "Fake it Till You Make it" on Hulu.
