Kaymer bests Watson in PGA playoff

HAVEN, Wis., Martin Kaymer outlasted Bubba Watson in a three-hole playoff Sunday to take the PGA Championship for his first tour title.

Kaymer won by a single stroke, finishing at even-par in the three-hole aggregate playoff at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin.

The playoff also would have involved Dustin Johnson, but he was given a two-stroke penalty after his finishing his round, knocking him out of contention.

Instead of joining Kaymer and Watson, Johnson ended up with a 1-over-par 73, while Watson (68) and Kaymer (70) finished regulation tied at 11-under 277.

Zach Johnson (70) and Rory McIlroy (72) knotted for third at 10-under 278.

Johnson thought he was heading into the playoff after finishing the 18th regulation hole, but after reaching the clubhouse was told by PGA officials he had been penalized two strokes for grounding his club and thus had been eliminated.
