A Quebec City man convicted of first degree murder in the disappearance of a woman he met online wants police to return $10,000 they seized from his apartment at the time of his arrest, money police had paid him as part of a sting operation.

Alain Perreault, 48, was convicted last week of killing Lyne Massicotte, 43, more than seven years ago. Massicotte's body has never been found.

To earn his trust and get a confession, undercover police posed as a criminal organization that wanted to recruit Perreault.

They gave him $14,000 dollars as a salary for performing fictitious tasks for the fake organization.

Perreault's lawyers say that money was not from the proceeds of crime, and he plans to go to court to get it back.

Members of Lyne Massicotte's family call the demand "inappropriate" and "indecent."

The missing woman's sisters Francine and Shirley Massicotte have said they expect Perreault to appeal the guilty verdict.

"That process goes in appeal. That's for sure. We'll have to come back. He can do it, but we think maybe he doesn't have — because the proof is very strong — he doesn't have other proof for him. He has no defence," Francine said.

If the verdict sticks, Perreault will face life in prison, with no chance of parole for 25 years.
