Landlord charged in death of tenant
MIAMI, (UPI) -- A Miami landlord has been arrested and charged with murder for allegedly shooting a tenant to death in an argument over overdue rent payment, police said.

Julian Gonzales, 35, was charged with second-degree murder and assault with a weapon in the death of Vladimir Santos, 25, at a home where Santos lived with his pregnant wife and their three children, The Miami Herald reported Friday.

Police arrested Gonzales at the house shortly after the shooting Monday, the newspaper said.

The shooting happened after an argument about overdue rent, police said.

"It's something quite unusual and extreme," North Miami Beach Detective Cora Mann said.

"You evict your tenants, you don't kill them," she said.

"We haven't had a homicide in this community in a long time," Mann said of the neighborhood where many Mexican and Puerto Rican families live. "It's been years."
