Langer takes lead at U.S. Senior Open

SAMMAMISH, Wash., Bernhard Langer, seeking his second major title in as many weeks, shot another sub-par round Friday and took a two-shot lead at the U.S. Senior Open.

Langer, coming off a victory last week at the British Senior Open, shot a 2-under 68 at the Sahalee Country Club course Friday for a two-day total of 137.

The only other players under par after 36 holes were Tommy Armour III, John Cook and J.R. Roth. They were all at 1-under 139, a shot in front of Michael Allen, Loren Roberts, Tom Watson and Fred Couples.

Tom Kite and Scott Simpson were both at 141.

Watson, Kite and Simpson are all trying to become the eighth player to have won both the U.S. Open and U.S. Senior Open. Those who have done so include Arnold Palmer, Billy Casper, Gary Player, Orville Moody, Lee Trevino, Jack Nicklaus and Hale Irwin.

Langer, who bested Corey Pavin by a shot last week at Carnoustie in Scotland, played the back nine in 3-under 32 Friday. He had an early tee time, but had to wait out a morning fog delay of 2 hours, 12 minutes.

The final groups barely finished before dark.

Mark Calcavecchia was among those at 142 and Pavin was at 147. Defending champion Fred Funk stood at 146.
