Vaughan leads U.S. Senior Open

SAMMAMISH, Wash., Bruce Vaughan, whose only win on the Champions Tour came at the 2008 Senior British Open, took a two-shot lead Thursday to start the U.S. Senior Open.

Vaughan, 53, shot a 4-under 66 at the Sahalee Country Club course and was one of just eight players who broke par over a layout that hosted the 1998 PGA Championship.

He is one of a number of players high on the leaderboard who have had success at the highest level in Britain. Loren Roberts, who won the Senior British Open four years ago, shared second place at 68 with amateur Tim Jackson -- a two-time winner of the U.S. Mid-Amateur championship who led this event after 36 holes last year before finishing 11th.

Bernhard Langer

, coming off his Senior British Open victory last week, shot a 69 and shared fourth place with Mark Calcavecchia, Tom Lehman, Joe Ozaki and Michael Allen. Calcavecchia and Lehman are both past winners of the British Open and Calcavecchia was in second place at the midway point of that event earlier this month in St. Andrews.

Vaughn has just one finish among the top five on the Champions Tour this year.

Tom Watson, who has been a runner-up in this tournament three times, shot a 70 -- as did Fred Couples. Corey Pavin, who was runner-up to Langer last week in Scotland, had a 72. Defending champion Fred Funk shot 76.
