NEW YORK, (UPI) -- The U.S. cable television network Syfy says it has hired Jack Bender to direct and produce its 90-minute-long, action-adventure pilot "Alphas."

Bender is best known for his work on "Lost," which ended its sixth and final season Sunday night.

His upcoming Syfy project was written by Zak Penn and Michael Karnow.

Bender's involvement in "Alphas" was announced Monday by Mark Stern, executive vice president of original programming for Syfy and co-head of content for Universal Cable Productions.

"Alphas," slated to commence production in Toronto this summer, follows a team of ordinary citizens who possess extraordinary and unusual mental skills, the network said.

"We are very excited that Jack has chosen to be part of 'Alphas,'" Stern said in a statement. "His vision and expertise are perfectly suited to this project, and will truly elevate it."
