Macedonia and Gazprom in energy talks
SKOPJE, Macedonia, (UPI) -- Russia's Gazprom has held talks with Macedonia about energy issues.

Gazprom Chief Executive Officer Aleksei Miller President met Thursday in St. Petersburg with Macedonian President Gjorge Ivanov and Vice Premier/Finance Minister Zoran Stavreski, Makedonska Informativna Agencija reported on Friday.

The trio held broad discussions covering a number of issues, including Gazprom clearing Macedonian debts in an effort to enhance cooperation between Macedonia and the Russian Federation in the energy sector and creating conditions for Gazprom to participate in construction of a gas pipeline network in Macedonia.

Another topic under discussion was Macedonia's possible involvement in Russia's "South Stream" natural gas pipeline, with Gazprom constructing a spur line which would transit Macedonian territory. Additionally, the two sides expressed interest in developing a partnership to allow Gazprom participation in constructing natural gas-fired power plants in Macedonia.

Gazprom subsequently issued a press release saying that the company and Macedonian government teams will begin immediately to coordinate work on outstanding technical issues to implement the projects.
