Malaria medicine cited in illnesses, death
CHENGDU, China, Medicines taken to prevent malaria is being blamed by local officials for sickening 104 people and killing one child in southwestern China.
Health officials said Wednesday said the victims were given chloroquine and primaquine Monday and soon after began complaining of exhaustion and nausea, Xinhua reported.
The medications were dispensed to 143 people of Mawan village who had come in close contact with a resident of the nearby village of Shashi who was diagnosed with falciparum malaria May 11, health officials said a statement.
At least two others among those who fell ill were in serious condition, the Chinese news agency said.
