-- A 42-year-old Los Angeles man is in custody after allegedly making death threats to a former congresswoman, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.

Sheron Nelson was arrested Friday on suspicion of making felony terrorist threats against retired Rep. Diane Watson, according to a statement from the sheriff's department.

Nelson is also accused of felony identity theft. Nelson was arrested at his state parole agent's office. Authorities said the man had made a series of phone calls threatening to kill Watson.

"We recovered the phone used to make the calls to Congresswoman Watson. It belonged to the suspect," Lt. Kent Wegener of the sheriff's department said in the statement. "Also, during questioning, he implicated himself."

Authorities said they are investigating the motive. The sheriff's department said a search of Nelson's home yielded "numerous" stolen electronics, but no weapons.

Watson represented California's 33rd congressional district, which includes parts of West Los Angeles and Culver City.

The arrest comes almost three weeks after the January 8 assassination attempt of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona.

Giffords, who suffered a gunshot wound to the head, was upgraded from serious to good condition this week. Jared Lee Loughner, 22, is suspected in the shooting in Tucson, Arizona, that left six people dead.
