Floyd Mayweather is heading back to the ring after a year-long layoff, the American said on Tuesday.
Mayweather, 34, announced on Twitter that he would challenge current title holder Victor Ortiz on September 17 for the WBC championship. No location for the fight was mentioned.
"My fans have been waiting long enough," Mayweather tweeted. "Floyd Mayweather vs Victor Ortiz. Sept-17 2011 for the WBC World Championship."
Mayweather, 41-0 with 25 knockouts, has not fought since a unanimous decision over Shane Mosley on May 1, 2010.
He has won world titles at five different weights, super featherweight, lightweight, light welterweight, welterweight and super welterweight, and is ranked as the number one challenger by the WBC despite his long inactivity.
"At this stage of my career, these are the challenges I look for, a young, strong, rising star looking to make his mark in boxing by beating me," the unbeaten Mayweather said in a statement.
"Ortiz is just going to be another casualty, the 42nd one who tried and failed."
Ortiz, 29-2-2 with 22 knockouts, won the WBC title by defeating Andre Berto in April.
"I am not going to let go of my title any time soon," Ortiz said. "This is going to be a great fight, but I will remain a world champion for many years to come."
