MI6 employee pleads guilty
LONDON, (UPI) -- A former employee of the British intelligence agency MI6 pleaded guilty Wednesday to violating the Official Secrets Act, a police source said.
Daniel Houghton, 25, admitted during a court appearance in London that he took classified material, the BBC reported. Justice David Bean ordered him jailed immediately and warned him a prison sentence is "inevitable."
British intelligence was told by its Dutch counterpart that Houghton had offered to sell them information for 2 million pounds ($3.5 million). The Dutch agents bargained with him, cutting the price to 900,000 pounds ($1.35 million) and then arranged a meeting at a London hotel, where he was arrested March 1.
A search of his apartment in Hoxton in East London turned up classified paperwork and a computer memory stick and hard drive with secret information, investigators say.
A police source told the BBC Houghton had a "champagne lifestyle on ginger-beer wages."
