Mid-Atlantic manufacturing little changed

PHILADELPHIA, -- The Philadelphia Federal Reserve Bank said manufacturing activity in the mid-Atlantic region was little changed in October.
"Regional manufacturing activity was steady," the bank's monthly survey indicated.
The survey's headline index increased from minus 0.7 in September to 1 in the latest survey. The new manufacturing orders, however, climbed 3 points, but remained negative for the fourth consecutive month. The shipments index rose 9 points, but only to the break-even point of zero after three months in the red.
Slightly more businesses responding to the survey indicated employment at their firms was higher than a year ago, 39.5 percent, compared to 34.6 percent of firms indicating payrolls had dropped.
