MLB: Chicago Cubs 12, Philadelphia 6

CHICAGO, Aramis Ramirez had a pair of two-run doubles Thursday and the Chicago Cubs pounded out 16 hits in downing Philadelphia 12-6.

The two-time defending National League champion Phillies, who began the second half of the season in third place in the Eastern Division, had a four-game winning streak snapped.

Ryan Howard gave Philadelphia the early lead with a two-run homer in the first, but the Cubs ran 47-year-old Jamie Moyer out of the game by scoring six times over the first three innings. Chicago added a five-run seventh that featured a two-run homer from Geovany Soto.

Howard also produced a three-run homer during a four-run ninth, bringing his total for the season to 19.

Ramirez had a two-run double to tie it in the first and delivered another during the seventh.

Chicago's go-ahead run came in the second when Starlin Castro tripled with one out and then stole home while pitcher Ryan Dempster was failing to make contact on an attempted squeeze bunt.

Dempster (8-7) coasted to the victory, giving up two runs on six hits in 6 2/3. He struck out nine.

Moyer (9-9) had his second shortest outing of the season, surpassed only by a one-inning appearance June 11 in which he surrendered nine runs to Boston.
