MLB: Detroit 6, Boston 5

BOSTON, Mich., Jhonny Peralta hit two homers in his Detroit debut Friday and the Tigers survived a ninth-inning grand slam by David Ortiz to down Boston 6-5.

Peralta, obtained Wednesday in a deal with Cleveland, hit a solo home run in the second and a two-run shot in the fifth to give the Tigers a 4-0 advantage en route to ending their four-game losing streak.

Detroit had a 6-1 lead going into the ninth and Jose Valverde, who retired the final batter in the eighth, stayed in the game to nail down the victory.

Valverde, however, walked the bases loaded with one out and Ortiz hit his 27th homer to bring the Red Sox within one. Valverde remained on the mound and struck out Victor Martinez before giving up a double and an intentional walk. Mike Cameron then ended the game by looking at a called strike three.

Robbie Reinhardt (1-1) picked up the victory with two scoreless innings of relief. The loss went to Jon Lester (11-6), who gave up four runs on 11 hits with seven strikeouts in six-plus innings.

Boston had won its previous three games.
