MLB: LA Dodgers 5, Colorado 4

DENVER, May 29 (UPI) -- Jonathan Broxton struck out Ryan Spilborghs in the ninth with the tying run on second Friday, preserving a 5-4 win for the Los Angeles Dodgers over Colorado.

The Rockies took a 4-0 lead through four innings, but were unable to capture what would have been their sixth straight victory.

Matt Kemp started the Los Angeles comeback with a solo homer in the fifth and Manny Ramirez put the Dodgers in front when he finished off a four-run sixth with a two-run shot.

Broxton came on in the ninth to protect the one-run lead and promptly hit Jason Giambi with a pitch. The Los Angeles closer retired the next two batters, but pinch-runner Dexter Fowler moved to second on Melvin Mora's deep fly out to right.

Los Angeles Manager Joe Torre then made the unusual move of putting the winning run on base when he ordered Broxton to intentionally walk Carlos Gonzalez, but that paid off when Spilborghs swung and missed on a 2-2 pitch to end the game.

It was the 12th save for Broxton, who salvaged the victory for starter Carlos Monasterios (2-0).

Monasterios gave up four runs on five hits over five innings and was the pitcher of record when the Dodgers scored their four runs in the sixth.

The loss went to Jeff Francis (1-1), who allowed all five runs on five hits in 5 1/3.
